Build Process

Our sign-building process begins with us sourcing rough-cut, kiln-dried Western Red Cedar direct from lumber mills in British Columbia.

Design Approval

Once a design has been approved by the customer and a development permit has been granted by the Town, production can begin. Typical sign production will take from 6-8 weeks.

Production

Production begins with the milling of the raw cedar. Rough-cut timber is made perfectly square using a jointer and planner, and then is glued and clamped to build a sign blank. The sign blank is then surfaced flat, cut into any shape, and carved using a CNC router table. The sign is then stained, painted, and sealed using techniques taught by Banff’s long-time master sign builder, Larry Whan.

Finishing

We offer various sign finishes, including stains and film-building polyurethane for natural wood grain protection, and 1Shot enamel sign paints for vivid colour with excellent durability and fade resistance. For those seeking added shine, we provide 23k gold gilding, making their signs stand out from the rest.

Delivery

Our in-house production process allows us to produce high-quality, long-lasting signage that we take great pride in. As a result, we are able to offer installation, delivery, and shipping services with confidence, distinguishing us from our competitors.

Why Cedar?

Custom Wood Signage

For thousands of years, builders have opted for wood due to its robustness and abundance as a renewable resource. However, the primary reason for their preference for wood is its aesthetic appeal. The natural grain, the fluidity in the wood’s lines, and the warm hues all serve to captivate the beholder’s attention. Hence, wood has always been the natural choice when it comes to creating something visually pleasing.

If you’re wondering why wood is the sustainable choice for your sign, consider these reasons:

  • Wood is a renewable resource, which means it can be harvested and replanted for continued use.
  • Using wood in sign construction can reduce the need for non-renewable materials like metal or plastic.
  • Properly sourced and processed wood can have a lower environmental impact than many other sign materials, particularly those made from fossil fuels.
  • Wood is biodegradable and recyclable, which means it can be safely disposed of without causing long-term harm to the environment.
  • Wooden signs are highly repairable, resulting in less waste and greater cost savings for customers while being environmentally friendly.

Western Red Cedar is our preferred material for building signs, thanks to its durability, beautiful texture, and warm color. Its natural oils make it resistant to insects and decay, ensuring its longevity.

We source our cedar from the interior forests of British Columbia, where it is one of the longest-living species in North America. This wood is renowned for its natural resistance to moisture, making it highly suitable for use in outdoor environments.

Its light weight, uniform texture, straight grain, and resin-free qualities make it the ideal material for building signs.

Canadian-grown Western Red Cedar is undoubtedly the best choice for exterior wood signs.
